The state government has reported to the National Green Tribunal that the Kerala State Pollution Control Board (SPCB) has taken action to identify industries and establishments located along the Perandoor and Edappally canals in Ernakulam.
During the investigation, it was found that 167 apartments and restaurants were operating without sewage treatment facilities or valid consent from the SPCB.
Therefore, notices have been issued to these units under the Water (Prevention & Control of Pollution) Act, 1974.
The Kerala State Pollution Control Board (SPCB) has taken action against the Kochi Corporation for failing to impose environmental compensation and prevent pollutants from being discharged into water bodies, as well as failing to implement waste management rules.
Furthermore, the SPCB has identified the railway station at Ernakulam Junction as one of the major contributors to pollution in the Perandoor canal. Although an Integrated Consent to Operate was issued to the railway station, valid until March 31, 2023, it was contingent upon the establishment of a sewage treatment plant (STP), which has yet to be provided.
As a result, the area behind the loco shed located in the South Railway station is contaminated with oil.
Additionally, the SPCB has issued a show cause notice to the Kochi Corporation asking for reasons why they have not imposed environmental compensation for their failure to prevent pollutants from being discharged into water bodies and implement waste management rules.
The Ernakulam Junction railway station has been identified as a major contributor to pollution in the Perandoor canal.
Although an integrated consent to operate was issued to the railway station on the condition of establishing a sewage treatment plant, no such plant has been constructed. As a result, the area behind the loco shed is polluted by oil discharged from the facility.
