Countries where forests increasing; Every year more than 47,000 km2 of forests are lost worldwide. In fact, 17% of the Amazon rainforest has been destroyed in the last 50 years. But some countries have recently seen startling increases in forest space.
The Global Forest Resources Assessment report published every five years by FAO provides an overview of the state of forests around the world. In this gallery, we present a list of the countries that have the most forest area. It is striking that the first five countries on the list contain more than half (54%) of the world’s forests.
In addition, forests cover almost a third of the total land area of the earth. The report also indicates that the world has lost 178 million hectares of forest since 1990, although the good news is that the rate of loss has slowed in recent years.
According to the report, the top 10 countries that recorded the highest average annual net gains in forest area over the past decade are China, Australia, India, Chile, Vietnam, Turkey, the United States, France, Italy and Romania. FRA 2020 has also credited the Indian government’s Joint Forest Management program for the significant increase in community-managed forest areas on the Asian continent.
