Ground Report | New Delhi: Watch: Assam Police firing on civilians; Two people were shot dead and at least seven people were injured in a clash when they were campaigning to clear a large land belonging to a state construction project at Garukhuti in the Dholpur area of Assam’s Darrang district. Policemen were injured.
- On Monday, 800 houses were demolished in Dhalpur village of Darrang district of Assam on the orders of the government.
- In fact, the government wants to implement the project on ‘use of government land for agricultural purposes’ on ‘4,500 bighas of land’ evacuated from these people.

Assam police firing on civilians
Assam police clashed with illegal intruders in Assam’s Sipajhar to evict illegal occupants. Several policemen have already been injured in the incident. The police force also fired back to control the situation.
“The police were given the task of flushing out the encroachers and were doing their job when they were attacked by people with stones and sharp weapons. There was firing from the police. The eviction drive will continue,” said Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

800 houses illegally
- The eviction is aimed at removing encroachments and starting community farming and the first phase was done on Monday when 800 houses illegally occupying around 4500 bighas of land were evicted and there were four illegal religious structures and a private institution.
- On Thursday, Assam police launched an operation to evict illegal entrants in the Dholupur No. 3 area of the state.
- At that time, some locals attacked the police with sharp weapons. Police also fired tear gas and rubber bullets.

- A video of the clash has also spread on the net. It showed a photographer jumping on a man lying dead on the ground.
- Policemen standing next to him are also running sticks at the shot man.
- Several policemen tried to drag the photographer away, but he continued to kick and punch the victim.
Several other videos that have come to light have been seen, with injured police officers being taken away by colleagues. Reports said that the police first fired in the air to bring the situation under control. Protesters have been accused of throwing stones in the opposite direction.
