Ground Report | New Delhi: Handcuff women in Bihar; Several villagers in Gaya, Bihar were injured on Tuesday (February 15th) after a clash with police over the alleged extraction of sand from a riverbank in the district.
Videos of the incident circulated on social media showed villagers, including women, sitting on the bank of the Morhar River in Ahatpur village with their hands tied. They were said to have been extracting sand from the bank and beaten by the police.
Ten villagers were arrested after they began throwing stones at police personnel and mining department officials who had arrived at the site to stop illegal mining, police said. The police reportedly used lathi grenades and tear gas canisters to disperse the villagers.
The whole incident was filmed. The video shows several villagers, including women, being handcuffed and forced to sit on the ground following a violent clash with police.
“Regarding the attack on police officers and the attempt to obstruct the work of the government, strict measures will be taken. An FIR has been registered in the case and the police are identifying those involved,” said to reporters Superintendent (City) Rakesh Kumar.
“The team of officials included ASP Manish Kumar, Gaya Sadar SDO Indraveer Kumar, SHOs of Belaganj, Chakand, Mein, Paibigha and other police officials,” said City SP Rakesh Kumar as quoted by TOI.
In another case, a 21-year-old died after being brutally assaulted by a suspected robbery mob in Sikharia village, Madhubani district, Bihar last month. According to reports, three people have been arrested in connection with the crime.
The deceased youth has been identified as Santosh Kumar (21), a resident of Jhanjharpur block. Those arrested include a certain Ramudgar Mahto (38), his wife Manju Devi (34) and his sister-in-law Rekha Devi (40). On Thursday, Kumar was reportedly beaten and held captive at Mahto’s home on suspicion of theft, a Times of India report citing sources said.
