A Delhi Police constable and three others were killed in a spate of violence that erupted in the Chandbagh area in Jaffrabad of New Delhi pro and anti citizenship act protesters came face to face.
Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal appealed to maintain peace as the northeast Delhi boiled over.
Here is what happened in Delhi
- In disturbing videos of the clashes, which spread to Bhajanpura, Maujpur, and Jaffrabad, among other areas, vehicles, shops and buildings were set ablaze.
- Police resorted to firing tear gas shells in an effort to control the situation. Once the violence escalated, paramilitary forces were called in to restore peace.
- Section 144 imposed outside Delhi Police Headquarters after calls for protest marches over the violence.
- Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla has stated that senior officers of the Delhi police are in the field. Assuring that sufficient forces have been deployed, he added that the situation was under control.
- Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal expressed sorrow at the death of the Delhi Police officer, called the violence “very distressing” and urged Union Home Minister Amit Shah – under whose control Delhi Police rolls up – to “restore law and order to mention peace in Delhi”. Political analyst Yogendra Yadav also took to twitter to raise alarm over the clashes.
- Delhi LG Anil Baijal took to twitter and said that he has instructed Delhi Police to ensure that law and order in North East Delhi. He has also urged everyone to restrain for peace.
- Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi Manish Sisodia has taken to Twitter urging people to not resort to violence. This was after an escalation of tension in northeast Delhi on Monday.
- Union Minister of State for Home G Kishan Reddy said over anti-CAA protest in Delhi, “violence in North-East Delhi orchestrated with an eye on US President’s visit to India. I condemn it. Govt of India will never tolerate violence. We will take strict action against those responsible. MHA is monitoring the situation. Additional forces have been deployed in Delhi. Our prime responsibility is to maintain law and order in Delhi.
- Former Congress president Rahul Gandhi condemned the violence saying, “The violence today in Delhi is disturbing and must be unequivocally condemned. Peaceful protests are a sign of a healthy democracy, but violence can never be justified. I urge the citizens of Delhi to show restraint, compassion, and understanding no matter what the provocation.”
- Delhi Metro has closed the Jaffrabad, Maujpur-Babarpur, Gokulpuri, Johri Enclave and Shiv Vihar stations, as well as Udyog Bhawan, Patel Chowk, Central Secretariat, and Janpath.
