Ground Report | New Delhi: Crimes against women increased; In the last 8 months, the number of complaints of crimes against women in 2021 has increased by 46% over the previous year, the National Commission for Women (NCW) informed. The NCW also said that more than half the complaints are from Uttar Pradesh.
From January to August, the NCW received a total of 19,953 complaints. Of these, 4,289 complaints were of domestic violence and 2,923 were of dowry harassment.

Crimes against women increased
According to the data, from January to August this year, 19,953 complaints of crimes against women were received by the NCW. This number is higher than the 13,618 complaints filed in the same period in 2020. The NCW received 3,248 complaints in the month of July, which is the highest in a month since June 2015.
More than half of these complaints came from the state of Uttar Pradesh alone, the women’s body also informed about this. The highest number of complaints were received from Uttar Pradesh (10,084) among the states and union territories. This was followed by 2,147 complaints in the national capital. The commission also said that 995 in Haryana and 974 have come from Maharashtra.

Total complaints, 7,036
Describing the huge increase in cases, NCW chief Rekha Sharma said that it is because the commission is conducting awareness programs regularly and the public is now more aware of its work, hence there has been a surge in complaints. “Also, the Commission has always made it a point to launch new initiatives to help women.
In line with this, we have started a round-the-clock helpline number as well to provide support services to needy women wherever they are. can file a complaint,” news agency PTI quoted Sharma as saying.
The NCW reported that out of the total complaints, 7,036 were filed under Right to Live with Dignity, followed by 4,289 complaints of domestic violence and 2,923 complaints of harassment of married women or dowry harassment.
According to the data, 1,116 complaints have been received regarding the offense of outraging the modesty or molestation of women, followed by 1,022 complaints of rape and attempt to rape and 585 complaints of cybercrime.
