Heavy rains across Madhya Pradesh have triggered floods in several regions, with alerts issued in 28 districts. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall until July 8, especially in eastern parts of the state.
In Mandla, Dindori, and Tikamgarh, rivers and streams have overflowed. Water entered homes and roads, cutting off key routes. In Mandla, a landslide shut down National Highway-30. In Jabalpur, the Narmada River rose to warning levels. A truck carrying gas cylinders was swept away in Salaiya, 30 km from Jabalpur.
Dindori’s Jogi Tikaria bridge saw half-submerged temples. The Thanwar River flooded parts of Nainpur. SDRF teams rescued families in Kariya and Gangora villages.
On Friday, rain hit 27 districts. Jabalpur recorded 72 mm, Narsinghpur 66 mm, and Datia and Sheopur over 100 mm. Schools in Dindori and Mandla remain shut today due to safety concerns.
Senior Meteorologist Dr. Divya E. Surendran explained the cause. “A monsoon trough is active from Bikaner to the Bay of Bengal. A cyclonic system over northeastern MP is also pulling moisture into the region. Together, they’re fuelling intense rainfall.”
Officials expect rain to remain strong across eastern MP through Monday. Flash floods and waterlogging have disrupted transport and electricity in several areas. Bridges in Mandla have been submerged, with one car reportedly swept away on Chikhli Poonia road. The driver escaped by jumping out of the window.
In Tikamgarh, flooding affected a tribal girls’ hostel. Police and SDRF teams carried out rescue operations.
The monsoon arrived late this year, entering Madhya Pradesh around June 13–14. Within five days, it covered all 53 districts.
Meanwhile, the IMD has predicted continued rain across Jabalpur, Katni, Seoni, Shahdol, and Anuppur. Heavy rain alerts are also in place for Bhopal, Indore, Rewa, and Ujjain.

Emergency services remain on high alert. District officials have urged residents to avoid riverbanks and travel only if necessary.

The government has placed rescue teams on alert in flood-prone areas. Local officials are monitoring water levels in rivers and reservoirs. Villagers in low-lying areas have been advised to move to safer locations if the situation worsens.
