Despite the reopening of Krishi Upaj Mandis after Diwali on November 4, Sehore’s markets in Madhya Pradesh witnessed unexpectedly low farmer turnout for soybean sales. Even with the government’s historic decision to purchase soybeans at MSP after 25 years, farmers are reluctant to approach procurement centres.

The primary cause is September’s devastating rainfall, which severely impacted the soybean crop. Farmers report a dramatic yield reduction, with production plummeting from the usual 10 quintals per acre to merely 1 quintal. Additionally, the harvested crop suffers from quality issues, including discolouration and high moisture content, resulting in lower market prices.

Our ground report, featuring interviews with farmers at MSP centres, reveals the challenges they face in this crisis. The situation highlights the severe impact of adverse weather conditions on agricultural productivity and farmer income in the region.
