Rich with cultural and spiritual heritage and the “Heart of India”- Madhya Pradesh has witnessed too many times for Lynching. Article 21 of the constitution states that Mob lynching is a violation of human dignity and a gross violation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Article 14 and 15 of the Constitution of India says that such incidents violate the Right to Equality and Prohibition of discrimination. However, it is not mentioned anywhere in the law of the land and hence it is only treated as murder as it is not yet covered under the Indian Penal Code. Let’s get to know the major lynching incidents in Madhya Pradesh:
Seoni district two tribal men Assaulted
On May 3, 2022, in Madhya Pradesh’s Seoni district two tribal men Dhan Shah Inawati and Sampat Batti of Simariya village died after they were allegedly assaulted by a group of 15-20 people over the doubt of cow slaughter. Another person, Brijesh Batti of Kurali village was also injured in the incident.
The complainant in the case and the opposition Congress in the BJP-ruled state have alleged that the attackers belonged to the Bajrang Dal. An official said that a case has been registered against 20 people involved with the incident that took place between 2.30 am and 3 am on Monday at Simaria under the Kurai police station area.
After this phenomenon, a group of congress along with MLA Arjun Singh Kakodia started a protest on the Jabalpur-Nagpur highway. Other officials and Seoni’s Superintendent of Police visited the protest site.
Meanwhile, in the whole incident, Congress has demanded a high-level inquiry into the incident and speedy action against the culprits. MP Congress president Kamal Nath tweeted, “I demand from the government that strict action be taken against the wrongdoer by declaring a high-level inquiry into this incident. All possible help should be given to the families of the victims and disposition for treatment of the injured man at government expense.”
On the other hand, State Home Minister Narottam Mishra said that the primary investigation was done and revealed that the meat confiscated from the deceased was beef and there was no involvement of Bajrang Dal activists in the matter.
The SIT, headed by Principal Secretary (Home) Rajesh Rajoura, will soon visit the Seoni district and submit its report to the government within 10 days.
Former CM and state Congress President Kamal Nath questioned the delayed response of the CM in the matter and tweeted that the delayed action by the CM has been taken under increasing pressure from the tribals.
The protests led by the Gondwana Gantantra Party (GGP) also saw participation from opposition Congress, BSP, Left parties, and tribal organizations such as BAMCEF and Jai Adivasi Yuva Shakti (JAYS), raising the prospect of Seoni becoming an ideal breeding ground. Tribals, Scheduled Castes and Minorities coming together against a joint opposition alliance and the ruling BJP, which is working hard to revive its prospects among 21% tribal voters and 16% SC voters of the state.
So far 14 people have been arrested in the case which is mostly from Bajrang Dal and Shri Ram Sena.
There was also a case in Satna of Madhya Pradesh where a man was killed by crowd on suspicion of cow slaughter and his partner was also seriously injured. Event is from 17th or 18th May 2018 where Riyaz , tailor by profession, lost his life on the “suspicion of cow slaughter” as they were carrying meat. No strong action was taken by the Madhya Pradesh government on this incident.
