Maharashtra rains: Orange alert in Mumbai; red for these 4 districts

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a ‘Red’ alert for Thane, Raigad, Pune and Palghar districts in Maharashtra due to incessant rains. The alert indicates the probability of heavy to very heavy rain in these regions for today and tomorrow.

Additionally, an ‘orange’ alert has been issued for Mumbai and Ratnagiri, implying a warning of moderate to heavy rain in these areas over the same period.

Collectors of the respective districts informed that all schools and colleges in Thane and Palghar districts will remain closed today due to the heavy rain alert.

Palghar collector Govind Bodke and his Thane counterpart Ashok Shingare issued the order to shut schools. In view of the heavy rainfall in the district, Thane residents have also been asked to stay indoors.

According to PTI’s report on Thursday, in response to the heavy rains in Palghar, Maharashtra, the district administration has directed 23 members of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team to be on high alert and prepared for dealing with torrential downpours.

The District Magistrate Office Palghar stated that the NDRF members were given specific instructions to be ready for any emergency situations caused by the persistent rainfall. Additionally, the Vasai Virar Municipal Corporation was informed through a letter to remain vigilant and offer essential support if required.

“An underway rescue operation is facing difficulty due to rain, but we are carrying it out. We have rescued 98 people out of 178 people so far, and unfortunately, 12 people have died. The CM is also monitoring the situation, and arrangements for the rescued people have been made here,” Maharashtra Disaster Management Minister Anil Patil said.
