Ground Report | New Delhi: India stance on Ukraine war; Amid the second round of trade talks with India, British Trade Minister Anne-Marie Trevelyan said on Thursday that she was “disappointed” by India’s stance on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Unlike other Western countries, India has not yet condemned the Russian attack and has not voted in favour of the UN resolution condemning the Russian attack. This causes unrest not only in the western countries but also in the United States.
Earlier this week, two Indian officials said their country could buy Russian crude oil and other commodities at discounted rates. The UK had started talks on a free trade agreement with India in January this year and the second round of talks is scheduled to end on Friday. Both countries say they will reach a final decision this year.
Will India’s stance on Russia affect ongoing trade talks with Britain? In this regard, Anne Marie Travelin said that she hopes that India will change its position, “We are very disappointed. But we are working together to change the minds of our Indian colleagues. “
Russia is a longtime supporter of arms to India, but British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss has suggested that deepening economic and defence ties with India would help end its dependence on Moscow. “Britain will continue to work with the rest of the world to prevent Putin from funding this war in the future,” she said.
Meanwhile, India’s finance ministry has said that its country is reviewing Western sanctions on Russia and is considering ways to pay for transactions with Russia. According to the Finance Ministry, India buys a large portion of its oil needs from the international market and is constantly exploring new possibilities in this regard.
