Even as the city mourns the death of legendary singer Zubeen Garg, a sudden crisis unfolded in Chandmari on Saturday evening after a major water pipe burst, flooding the area.
The incident took place shortly before 7 pm, when water started gushing out at high pressure. Eyewitnesses said the burst sent water shooting nearly 70 to 80 feet into the air, reaching the rooftops of nearby three- and four-storey buildings.
The heavy flow flooded adjoining roads, causing severe traffic jams in the busy locality. Commuters struggled to move as vehicles stalled in knee-deep water.
Authorities were expected to cut off the supply immediately, but as of the time of filing this report, the water flow had not been stopped. The Guwahati Jal Board and the local administration are under pressure to take swift measures to prevent further damage.
The extent of losses is still being assessed. Residents fear the flooding may have damaged ground-floor shops and homes in the area. “We are worried about our electrical connections. Water has already entered several houses,” said Anjali Das, a Chandmari resident.
This is not the first such incident in the city. On June 10, a pipe leakage near the Kamrup Metro District Commissioner’s office in Hengrabari caused similar flooding and traffic disruption.
Officials said they were monitoring the Chandmari situation and more details on damages and repairs would be available soon.
