Uttar Pradesh Director General of Police (DGP) Mukul Goel was removed from the post on Wednesday for negligence in government work. Goel has been sent to the post of Director General of Police (DG) Civil Defense, The Indian Express reported.
“Director General of Police Mukul Goel has been removed from the post of DGP due to neglect of government work, lack of interest in departmental work and inaction,” the paper quoted an official statement as saying.
Goel was not seen in the recent press briefings on important government decisions regarding law and order. Actually, Prashant Kumar had recently addressed the press along with Additional Chief Secretary Avnish Kumar Awasthi.
In September last year, Goel inspected the Hazratganj police station in Lucknow and expressed displeasure over the poor maintenance of records and lack of cleanliness on the premises. Despite his instructions, the station in charge was not removed.
Before becoming the DGP, Goel was the Additional Director General of the Border Security Force.
He was among several IPS officers who were suspended in 2007 by the then Mayawati government for alleged irregularities in police recruitment. He was later reinstated and the case was closed. He was ADG (Law and Order) when the Muzaffarnagar riots took place in 2013 during the rule of the Akhilesh Yadav government.
Goel, a 1987 batch IPS officer, was appointed as the Director-General of Police (DGP) of the state in June last year.
Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) Prashant Kumar has been asked to hold the post of Director General of Police till a new Director-General of Police is elected.
Before becoming the DGP of Uttar Pradesh, he was posted as Additional Director General of Police in the Border Security Force. Born in Muzaffarnagar, Goel holds an electrical engineer degree from the Indian Institute of Technology.
