A Kashmiri Pandit Rahul Bhatt was shot dead by militants in Budgam district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said. According to the police, the militant shot Rahul Bhatt, an employee of the Tehsil office at Chadoora in Budgam district. He was admitted to the hospital.
Rahul Bhatt was admitted to SMHS Hospital in Srinagar, but he died there. The police have also informed that in the initial investigation it has been found that two militants are involved in this crime and they had opened fire with a pistol.
“#Terrorists fired upon one employee namely Shri Rahul Bhat from #minority community in Tehsildar office Chadoora, #Budgam. He has been shifted to hospital,” the Kashmir zone police tweeted confirming the news.
Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah have condemned the incident. He wrote on Twitter that the killings are continuing by targeting people and due to lack of control, the feeling of fear grows. He has expressed his sympathy to his family members of Rahul.
Omar Abdullah tweeted, “I unequivocally condemn the murderous militant attack on Rahul Bhatt. Rahul was a government employee working in the Tehsil office in Chadoora where he was attacked. Targeted killings continue & a sense of fear grows unchecked. My heartfelt condolences to Rahul’s family. RIP.”
The targeted killings had started in October, and the victims were mostly migrants from outside Jammu and Kashmir who came in search of work and indigenous Kashmiri pundits.
Last month, several Kashmiri Pandit organizations raised concerns over fresh threats against members of the minority community and targeted killings of non-locals and Hindus by suspected terrorists.
Kashmiri Pandit Sangharsh Samiti (KPSS) chief Sanjay Tikku had said that the government, in the last three years, has again failed to ensure the safety of minorities living in the Kashmir Valley. “This indicates that the Kashmiri minorities will have to leave the Kashmir Valley again due to the failure of the Kashmiri society and administration,” Tikku said.
