This past Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the women-led water conservation initiatives in the Madhya Pradesh districts of Dindori and Chhatarpur in his “Mann Ki Baat” program.

He highlighted the initiatives by the Sharda Aajeevika Self-Help Group in Raipur village, Dindori, and the Hari Bagiya SHG in Khonp village, showcasing their contributions to collective action. The Prime Minister also praised the innovative approaches emerging across the country to enhance water conservation and improve groundwater levels. These women are also engaged in fish farming which provides them an additional source of earning.

Chief Minister Mohan Yadav listened to PM Modi’s address from his official residence.

Thriving at Their Fish Parlor

The women under the SHG run ‘Didi Smart Fish Parlor.’ The initiative allows them to sell the fish directly from their shop. It has reduced their hurdles to go to the market and find buyers.

Sharda Dhurve, President of  Sharda Aajeevika Self-Help Group told ANI,

“There are 12 women in the SHG who work as fish farmers. We are thankful for this recognition.”

Before this, the women were engaged in agriculture along with their families, but now they also have their own identity and ownership of their work. Recently, the women also took out a loan and started a chicken farm.

“We are now able to earn upto Rs.10,000 in fish farming,” added another member of the SHG.

Boosted by Recognition

“I have come across two inspiring initiatives in Madhya Pradesh. In Raepur village, Dindori district, the construction of a large pond has led to a significant increase in groundwater levels, benefiting local women. The Sharda Livelihood Self-Help Group and its members have launched a new fisheries business. Through their fish parlour, these women are selling fish and boosting their income,” Prime Minister stated.

Self-help groups (SHGs) are small, informal associations of individuals, typically women, who support each other in various aspects of life, particularly in financial and economic empowerment. These women from Dindori are transforming the utility of such groups by not only working to save the water but also to earn a livelihood for themselves.

Another member of the SHG says,

“We are overwhelmed that the Prime Minister appreciated our work. We will continue to do everything in our capacity.
