Senior IPS officer Dinkar Gupta was appointed Director General of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) by the Center on Thursday.

“The Cabinet Appointments Committee approved Gupta’s appointment as Director-General, NIA until March 31, 2024, which is the date of his retirement,” a new order reads.

Gupta is an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer from the 1987 batch of the Punjab cadre. In another development, the Intelligence Bureau (IB) Special Director, Swagat Das, has been appointed as Special Secretary, Internal Security, Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). Mr. Das, an IPS officer from the 1987 batch of the Chhattisgarh cadre, will hold the post until November 30, 2024, according to the order.

Mr. Das was the highest-ranking official in the domestic intelligence agency after the Director of the Intelligence Bureau, Arvinda Kumar. Mr. Kumar’s extended term will end on June 30. If he is not granted a new extension, and with the departure of Mr Das from IB, there are two likely candidates for the top post of Director, IB: Batch of 1987 IPS Officer A.S Rajan and Batch IPS Officer from 1988, Tapan Deka.
