An Australian rugby league player has been found dead in Spain after disappearing on a night out with friends. Liam Hampson’s body was found on the floor of a Barcelona nightclub after an apparent fall.
He had been travelling around Europe with a group including National Rugby League (NRL) players, who reported him missing.
The 24-year-old Redcliffe Dolphins player was on a season-ending trip to Europe with his National Rugby League (NRL) teammates and was not seen for 30 hours after disappearing in Barcelona on Tuesday.
His body was found on the floor of the popular Sara Apolo bar by an employee on Wednesday afternoon, Barcelona police confirmed.
How did Liam Hampson die?
The death is being investigated as an accident, according to police. As Spanish media, Hampson’s body was discovered on October 18 by workers at the Sala Apolo nightclub in Barcelona, where he had spent the night with friends.
Staff from Apolo, a concert hall and nightclub in Barcelona, found the body of a young man on Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. (1300 GMT) who police identified as an Australian who was reported missing, a police spokesman said, adding that he died after falling 10 meters in what was likely an accident.
The Barcelona Police arrived at the scene before carrying out the necessary checks and identifying the body. “This morning nightclub staff found a body on the floor in an area of the nightclub, Sala Apolo, where Liam was last seen,” a police spokesperson told 7 News.
According to Spanish news publication El Caso, police believe Hampson died as a result of an unintentional fall.
According to News Corp, some Australian players in England for the Rugby League World Cup, including Brisbane striker Patrick Carrigan, knew Hampson. Team officials confirmed to News Corp that players involved in the World Cup campaign knew Hampson.
