Professor GN Saibaba, accused in the case of alleged links with Naxalites, has been released by the Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court.
The bench of Justice Rohit Dev and Justice Anil Pansare has given this decision while reversing the decision of the trial court.
Professor GN Saibaba of Delhi University was sentenced to life imprisonment by the trial court in the year 2017 for having links with Naxalites.
An appeal was filed by Professor Saibaba challenging this decision in the Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court. GN Saibaba, a professor of English at Delhi University, was arrested by the Maharashtra Police in May 2014 for having links with Maoists.
Professor GN Saibaba has also been associated with an organization named Revolutionary Democratic Front as a social worker. He has been the deputy secretary of the Revolutionary Democratic Front.
The Revolutionary Democratic Front had been the target of intelligence agencies for its links with the Maoists.
It was also alleged that in 2012 there was a conference of the Revolutionary Democratic Front (a front organization for Maoists that is banned in Odisha and Andhra Pradesh) in which Saibaba participated.
“Saibaba was the deputy undersecretary and there is a speech by him in which he said ‘naxalism is the only way and denounces the assembly of the democratic government’. All these videos were played in court,” the prosecutor had said while the case. was being heard at a session court in Maharashtra’s Gadchiroli in 2017.
Saibaba had been in contact with Maoists from various countries including Nepal and Sri Lanka, the prosecutor said.
The court had found Saibaba guilty under various provisions of the strict Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and the Indian Penal Code (IPC). He, along with three other defendants in the case, was sentenced to life in prison by the court.
