Population growth report: Madhya Pradesh ranks third nationally

According to the recently released Sample Registration System (SRS) 2025 report from the Registrar General of India, Madhya Pradesh now holds the position of third fastest-growing state in India based on natural population growth.

With a natural growth rate of 15.7 (the difference between birth and death rates), Madhya Pradesh trails only Bihar (19.0) and Uttar Pradesh (17.8), while significantly exceeding the national average of 11.8. A notable rural-urban divide exists within the state, with rural areas growing at 17.3 compared to 11.2 in urban regions.

The 2019-21 data reveals Madhya Pradesh also maintains the third-highest birth rate nationally at 23.8 births per 1,000 people annually, well above India’s average of 19.3. Bihar leads with 25.6, followed by Uttar Pradesh at 24.8. In contrast, southern states Kerala (12.9) and Tamil Nadu (13.4) report the country’s lowest birth rates. Within Madhya Pradesh itself, the rural birth rate (25.7) substantially exceeds the urban rate (18.5).

Regarding mortality, Madhya Pradesh ranks eighth with 8.1 deaths per 1,000 people annually (8.4 rural, 7.3 urban), above the national average of 7.5. States with higher mortality rates include Chhattisgarh (10.1), Kerala (9.0), and both Karnataka and Gujarat (8.5).

These statistics will be crucial for evaluating the effectiveness of Madhya Pradesh’s health and population management initiatives. The elevated birth rate, particularly in rural areas, signals a need for enhanced family planning and reproductive health services throughout the state.
