The National Green Court (NGT) ordered the joint committee to submit its report to the court on the alleged illegal construction in Haridwar and, as a result, the increasing pollution in the Ganges. The case is related to the Beliram Ashram in Haridwar.
The court stressed the importance of submitting the report as soon as possible and warned that if there were to be future failures, drastic measures would be necessary. The next hearing in this case will be held on July 31, 2023.
It should be noted that the NGT had previously requested a factual report on this matter from a joint committee consisting of the Uttarakhand Environmental Protection and Pollution Control Board, the Ganga National Mission and the Haridwar District Magistrate in an order dated 3 March 2023. However, so far no report has been submitted in this regard.
The issue of illegal construction and pollution in the Ganges is a matter of great concern. Haridwar is an important pilgrimage site and one of the seven holiest places in Hinduism. Millions of devotees come to Haridwar every year to bathe in the Ganges and participate in religious ceremonies.
River pollution caused by illegal construction and other activities is a serious threat to the environment and public health, as well as to the cultural and spiritual significance of the region.
The NGT directive to submit a report highlights the urgent need to take action to address the problem. The joint committee must work expeditiously to collect relevant data and information on the matter and provide a factual report to the court.
The NGT’s warning of possible drastic steps if there are future failures indicates the seriousness of the situation and the importance of taking timely and effective measures to address it.
