The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heavy to extremely heavy rainfall warning for 18 states and union territories for May 31 and June 1. The warning covers Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, West Bengal, Sikkim, Karnataka, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Kerala, Goa, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Uttarakhand.

In a statement issued on Friday evening, the IMD said that “isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is very likely” in parts of Northeast and South India. It also warned of thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds reaching speeds of 40–70 km/h in several areas.

The IMD said that Northeast India, especially Assam and Meghalaya, may experience extremely heavy rainfall on May 30 and June 1. Rainfall above 30 cm is likely in parts of Meghalaya. Other northeastern states, including Arunachal Pradesh and Tripura, are also expected to see intense rain activity over the next few days.

In South India, states such as Kerala, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu are likely to see widespread moderate to heavy rain between May 30 and June 1. Some areas may witness thunderstorms and strong winds. The IMD said extremely heavy rain is expected over Kerala and Mahe on May 30.

Northern states including Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, and Uttarakhand will likely receive scattered rainfall. Thunderstorms and squalls with wind speeds up to 70 km/h are expected on May 30 and 31. Dust storms are also likely in parts of Rajasthan.

East and Central India are also likely to be affected. The IMD has predicted light to moderate rainfall in Odisha, Bihar, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Vidarbha. Some regions may see wind speeds reaching 60–70 km/h on May 30 and June 2.

As per the IMD, a slight drop of 2–3°C in maximum temperatures is expected over Northwest India. On the other hand, maximum temperatures may rise by 3–5°C over East and Central India over the next few days.

The IMD has also issued specific warnings for fishermen. It advised them not to venture into the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal, as squally weather and high waves are expected. Fishing operations have been suspended in these areas until June 4.

The IMD urged residents, local governments, and disaster response teams to stay alert and take necessary precautions. The department said its forecasts and warnings are available online and updated regularly.
