The Meteorological Department has issued a heavy rain alert for 23 districts of Madhya Pradesh, including Indore, Ujjain, and Jabalpur. Three districts, Dewas, Khandwa, and Burhanpur, are likely to see extremely heavy rainfall, up to 8.5 inches, within 24 hours.
Rain began early this morning in several cities. Strong winds and lightning have also been reported. Officials say the weather could disrupt Independence Day celebrations.
Senior weather scientist Dr. Divya E. Surendran said, “A trough is passing through Madhya Pradesh. One monsoon trough and three cyclonic systems are active, along with a low-pressure area. This combination is bringing heavy rainfall.”
In the last 24 hours, Pachmarhi received 42 mm of rain, Guna 38 mm, Indore 14 mm, and Tikamgarh 7 mm. The state’s average rainfall is 37 inches; so far, it has received 30.3 inches—82 percent of the seasonal quota.
The eastern divisions, including Jabalpur and Sagar, have received 33 percent more rainfall than average. Western divisions like Indore and Ujjain have seen 21 percent more rain.
An orange alert for very heavy rain is in place for Narmadapuram, Betul, and Harda. Warnings of heavy rain extend to Raisen, Sehore, Burhanpur, Khandwa, Khargone, Barwani, Dhar, Indore, Dewas, Shivpuri, and Gwalior. Authorities have urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel and take precautions against lightning strikes.
