As Bharat Jodo Yatra reaches Karnataka, Congress leader, Rahul Gandhi, noticed an old woman standing with two cucumbers in her hand and struck up a conversation with her.
The woman herself explained that she had grown the cucumbers on the land that was allocated to her under the “Grower’s Land Policy” at the time when Rahul Gandhi’s grandmother, Indira Gandhi, was Prime Minister. He seemed visibly shaken towards the end of their conversation.
The Grandmother handed over both the cucumbers to Rahul Gandhi and said, I have grown these in my field which I got because of Indira Gandhi. When she was the Prime Minister, she had implemented land reforms, due to which I got that farm”.
She further added “today it is my family’s biggest support and deposit capital. These cucumbers are from the same field. This is the most precious gift I have to give you. Saying this, her eyes filled with tears. The atmosphere became inconsolable. Rahul Gandhi also got emotional and hugged the woman. Amma went happy.”
The Bharat Jodo Yatra has managed to remind people of one of the greatest achievements of the festival. Young people who observe the tumultuous events in the state take note and investigate the social revolution that took place without bloodshed almost five decades ago.
Karnataka is one of the few states where the policy whereby the land was given to a poor farmer who tilled it was implemented very effectively. The then Chief Minister D Devaraj Urs secured land distribution to poor farmers from landlords who owned hundreds of acres.
