Queen Elizabeth II, the longest-reigning monarch in British history, has died at the age of 96. The Royal Palace announced the Queen’s death on Thursday. She was placed under medical supervision at Balmoral Castle, her summer residence in Scotland, after doctors were “concerned” for her health. Queen Elizabeth was called Isabel ll in Spain, Do you know why?

The Explanation

And, if you google there is no information about Elizabeth II name ever being ‘Isabel’. So, why is everyone calling her that?

The answer is simple. In Spanish, that’s what she is called. For example, in Spanish, Richard is “Ricardo”, or George is “Jorge”, Stephen is “Esteban”, and many more.

Another, interesting thing is, Elizabeth and Isabel both the words have same Etymology. Basically, same origin story or derivation. The word ‘Elizabeth’ has medieval Hebrew origin i.e. Elisheba. But, they can’t be translated as above-mentioned words were. So, in case of Isabel; El is dropped from the word. In Spanish, Elizabeth is considered a masculine name as el ‘the’.

Basically, Isabel is a feminine rendition of Elizabeth.

Now the question, what happens to ‘t’ sound? Ah, that’s complex linguistics to explain. And, we definitely become boring. Anyhow, to put it simply, /t/ is replaced with /l/ as /t/ does not appear word-finally in standard Spanish.

Isabel II Dies, Now what?

She was one of the most celebrated monarchies in the world history, particularly in England’s history. Her personal life was showcased through the Netflix’s award-winning show The Crown. Although, the royal family has show concerns with the depiction of certain events in the show. Recently, the royal family has been in lot of news for various reasons primarily, the accusation of racism in the Buckingham Palace.

Queen’s body is currently in the Balmoral Castle, in Scotland. Operation Unicorn will be implemented as she died in that castle. Now the Scotland’s parliament would be suspended, and preparation for the state funeral for The Majesty would begin.

The queen was 96 years old, after her demise, Prince Charles, 73 year son of the Queen, will become the new king.

Below-mentioned is the statement from the royal family.
